Visit of Professor Ralf Michaels, director of the Max Planck Institute of Foreign and International Private Law (Hamburg).

From 14 to 16 June this year, the new director of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law (Hamburg), Professor Ralf Michaels, was a guest at the Faculty of Law at TSU. The aim of the visit was to negotiate the continuation and deepening of the long-standing cooperation between the Max Planck Institute and the Faculty of Law which also to include new components of the cooperation - for example, closer collaboration between researchers - both professors and doctoral students - with the aim of exchanging research results and identifying areas of common interest. Specific plans for joint long-term collaboration were also discussed during the talks. The talks were attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Law Tamar Zarandia, the deputy Dean Giorgi Dgebuadze and the expert for internationalization and the scientific research service Lia Shatberashvili.

 

On 15 June, a public lecture by the Director of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law (Hamburg), Professor Ralf Michaels, on "The Hamburg Guidelines on the Determination and Application of Foreign Law in Legal Proceedings" was held at the TSU Faculty of Law, attended by members of the TSU Faculty of Law, judges, academics and students. The public lecture was followed by a discussion on the topics covered in the lecture.

 

As part of the long-standing cooperation between the TSU Faculty of Law and the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, three joint international conferences have already been organized.

 

In May 2025, a joint TSU and MPI international conference is planned on the topic of "Challenges of Georgia on the way to EU integration: contribution of science", which will be dedicated to the memory of the former director of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg, TSU honorary doctor Jürgen Basedow.
